A little bit of history…

EuroShop is the world’s biggest exhibition for retail technology. It first started in 1966 as a “joint brand” by Messe Duesseldorf and EHI Retail Institute both in Germany.  Although its name had immediately an European scope, in 1966 only 20 percent of its visitors were coming from abroad.

EuroShop 2011

The world’s biggest trade fair for retailers’ investment needs, EuroShop 2011, took place in Dusseldorf, Germany between February 26 and March 2, 2011.

In 2011, EuroShop was five times bigger than its first fair , welcoming  2038 exhibitors from 53 countries. Over 60% of EuroShop trade visitors from more than 90 countries around the globe travelled to Düsseldorf this year. An increase in visitors from Italy, Brazil and the USA is also important to mention.

According to Professor Dr. Bernd Hallier, Chairman of the EuroShop Advisory Board and CEO of the EHI Retail Institute, Cologne: “This great international interest demonstrates very clearly how dynamic global retail is and the exceptional position of EuroShop as its economic driver”.

The greenest EuroShop ever could be seen this year – from energy-saving chilling cabinets and the use of sustainable materials for shop fitting and display mannequins to the employment of regenerative energies and energy-saving technology for store lighting.

The EuroShop brand consists of 4 sub-brands:  EuroCIS, EuroConcept, EuroSales,  and EuroExpo.

In what concerns the EuroConcept area, lighting stood out as one of the fastest growing segments. Over 150 international lighting exhibitors occupied one entire exhibition hall.

In the EuroSales segment, numerous highlights came from the manufacturers of premium display mannequins. These included abstract, elegant mannequins in high-impact black & white for the prime segment as well as colourful kids’ mannequins not forgetting quirky, cartoon-like groups of mannequins.

The EuroCIS area concentrated on further developments related to mobile devices, both for units operated by outlet staff and for customers’ self-scanning solutions and Smart Phone applications.

The EuroExpo segment once again fascinated visitors with examples of outstanding stand construction supplying proof of the sector’s high creativity.

Beside the exhibition,  the fair was driven by special conferences/events such as the Design ward, the IT Award , the Science Award, the International Design Conference, the POPAI Conference. The EuroShop Retail Design Conference, for example, generated special enthusiasm thanks to top-notch architects and experts from world-famous retail companies such as: Brendan Sullivan, VF Corporation; Sharon A. Lessard, Supervalu; Ignaz Gorischek, Neiman Marcus and Harald Fischer, Rewe Group. Last but not least,  in advance of the exhibition many foreign groups used the EHI offer for store-checks and discussions with retail-management or ECO-architects. The professors of the European Retail Academy visited additionally the GS1 Germany and its showroom for RFID in the total supply chain.

From the point of view of “Romanian Distribution Committee Magazine” it is also worth to underline a very interesting coincidence, starting from an impressive image from this year edition of the EuroShop:

– this image presents Professor BERND HALLIER in the middle of an important group from China;

– on 24th January 2011, the website of the scientific Journal of the Romanian Distribution Committee presented that while at the international level a high-level meeting between USA and China took place, a new book of Professor John Saee (one of our distinguished Editorial Board Members) – „China and the Global Economy in the 21st Century, Routledge-Taylor and Francis Group of Publishing” – is to be published in the USA, UK and Canada simultaneously; otherwise, Professor John Saee has been (2008-2009) invited as member of the Selection Committee for review of manuscripts for presentation plus Chair of the China’s competitiveness main track at Harvard International Conference, venue Harvard University, Boston, USA;

– in the same day, 24th January 2011, The Senate of Romanian Scientific Management Society  (SSMAR) decided unanimously to award the prestigious title of Honorary Member to Professor JOHN SAEE, and to Professor BERND HALLIER (also one of our distinguished Editorial Board Members).
